Product bundle

A product bundle is two or more items sold together as a single line at one price. Its cost is the cost of the items inside it, plus whatever it takes to pack them as one.

Updated

Formula
bundle cost = sum of (component cost × quantity) + bundle-level costs
Also called
bundle, kit, set, multipack
  • Candle, Fig

    CN-FIG

    2 × $4.10 = $8.20

  • Holder, Brass

    HD-BRS

    1 × $6.75 = $6.75

Gift set

Unit cost, summed from its parts

$14.95

Packaging and pick and pack are the set's own and are charged once.

A gift set costed from its parts. Change the candle's cost and the set's cost follows; remove it and the set has no cost at all.

Types

  • Fixed bundle: the contents are set. A gift set is always two candles and a holder.
  • Multipack: several units of one item.
  • Mix and match: the customer chooses the contents, so the cost varies with each order.

Costing a fixed bundle

Component Quantity Cost each Line
Candle, Fig 2 $4.10 $8.20
Holder, Brass 1 $6.75 $6.75
Components $14.95
Gift box 1 $1.60 $1.60
Bundle cost $16.55

Common mistakes

  • Typing the total in once. The figure is right on the day and wrong after the next change to a component’s cost.
  • Leaving it empty. The bundle then reports as all profit, or drops out of profit reports.
  • Adding up only the parts you know. A missing component cost should make the bundle’s cost missing, not smaller.
  • Charging per-order costs per component. A set that ships in one parcel is picked and packed once.

In Cogsy

Cogsy costs a bundle from its components, reads Shopify’s fixed bundles on every sync, and lets you define your own by SKU. If any part has no cost, the bundle has none and is flagged.

Questions

What is the difference between a bundle and a multipack?
A multipack is several units of the same item, such as three candles. A bundle usually combines different items. Both are costed the same way, from the components and their quantities.
Should a bundle have its own cost or use its components' costs?
Using the components keeps it right when their costs change. Give the bundle its own cost only when it is bought or assembled as a finished item with its own price.
